Chip Zdarsky Talks Avengers, One More Day, Captain Marvel and More — Marvel Comics

Chip Zdarsky joins us to talk Avengers!

Chip Zdarsky is the talented writer/artist who has worked on several fan-favorite titles, including Howard the Duck, Daredevil, Sex Criminals, Jughead, and Batman. In 2026, Zdrasky launched Avengers: Armageddon (with Delio Diaz, Frank Alpizar, Cory Petit, Ario Anindito, and Jesus Aburtov), a new Marvel event taking place across several series, including his Captain America run and leading into his new Avengers run with Marco Checchetto.

I asked Zdarsky about recent developments in Avengers: Armageddon, and he talked about several plot points going forward! Check out our conversation below.

Now that Armageddon is over, how exciting is it to see the story and plot points you established in your most recent work start to bear fruit in the upcoming run?

It’s super fun! I truly appreciate getting the chance to build stories over several titles and several years. Everything’s been leading to Avengers, so it’s really satisfying to finally be at this point.

What can you say about Marco Checchetto's art on the book, and about working with him again on a Daredevil book?

It’s Marco! He’s the best! I learned during Devil’s Reign that my job is to really just give Marco characters to make cool. He’s so good at giving us fresh feeling takes on classic characters, so it’s been really nice seeing what he does on the page again. Also, I had to put Daredevil on this team! It would be a crime to not have Marco draw Matt again.

What was it like to hide David Colton's role in the Avengers, his true nature, and his Miracleman connection, as the initial solicitations came out?

Hard! I mean, we held the secret for as long as we could. I was genuinely angry when it finally leaked, but I’ve managed to meet readers at shows who didn’t know about the leak and were actually surprised at the reveal, which is nice. I know people are reading this online, but: get offline!

What was behind the decision to depower Carol? Was it to balance out Miracleman's arrival? Was shortening Carol's hair again and returning to her most iconic design (at least part of it) made in lockstep with the upcoming Captain Marvel creative team?

It was mostly about giving Carol a new obstacle to write through. With Avengers she’s got to get her mojo back, and that’s a fun place to start with someone so closely tied to the team, who used to be its leader. The short hair was just a chance to have a visual distinction between Carol from before Armageddon, and Carol after. I suppose if I was being deep and mythological, I could liken it to Samson and his hair, but I’m not that smart! All of this was underway before Willow and Rachael came onboard with their series, so I’m just super thankful that Willow has great stories to tell about Carol at this stage! And, having worked with Rachael several times, the book is going to be gorgeous and amazing.

The page of Tony seeing Mephisto holding Spider-Man- will you revisit the events of One More Day? What can you say about that page?

One More Day plays some part in all of this, but it’s not going to be so straightforward as a lot of people probably think!

Nick Fury Sr. is back and has plans for Bucky Barnes, as teased in IMMORTAL SOLDIERS #1. What can you say about his upcoming adventures and the storyline coming in the upcoming one-shot?

Ben Harvey

Fury Sr. is going to play a big part in CAPTAIN AMERICA going forward, and IMMORTAL SOLDIERS tees that up in a fun, spy way. And Bucky’s about to go on a very interesting journey.

Is there anyone on the Avengers team you're most excited for readers to see your version of?

I really loved writing Logan during WEAPONS OF ARMAGEDDON! So I’m super into crafting his dialogue right now. Luke and Jessica have also been a lot of fun to write, hitting that relationship dynamic.

What are the most challenging and rewarding parts of writing a book this big while collaborating with other writers and artists whose characters run at the same time?

I mean, just the continuity of it all. I work far ahead, so there are definitely times when I have to rewrite bits because Carol is looking up at the moon, but it turns out Cyclops blew up the moon.
