Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, Into the Unbeing, and Suicide Squad: Dream Team - June 12 Comic Reviews

It's another good week for comics!

This week’s comic book reviews. While I try to read everything, I can’t review everything. So, if you’re a publisher who wants me to check out their upcoming releases, email me at [email protected]!

DC Comics

Blue Beetle #10 - Josh Trujillo, Adrian Gutierrez, Wil Quintana, and Lucas Gattoni - Trujillo, Guiterrez, Quintana, and Gattoni near the finish-line for the amazing series. Blue Beetle #10 is an epic showdown between Jaime and Pinnacle, with some jaw-dropping action, epic superheroism, and plenty of Ted Kord-goodness. 8.5/10

Batman: Gotham By Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #1 - Andy Diggle, Leandro Fernandez, Dave Stewart, Simon Bowland -  Leandro Fernandez’s art builds the late 1800s Gotham brick-by-brick, offering a stunning version of the iconic city and conflicting classes within. Diggle’s writing is superb, as the issue ends with the immediate need of wanting more. 8/10

Suicide Squad: Dream Team #4 - Nicole Maines, Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Adriano Lucas - Dreamer against Amanda Waller proves to be one hell of a match-up. This gritty, violent tale features one of my favorite Bizarro moments in years, while Dreamer kicks some serious ass. The book looks great as despite plenty of explosiveness and what’s going on being quite busy, it’s cohesive, while featuring some beautiful layouts. Dreamer is ready for her own solo title. 8.5/10

Dark Horse

Into the Unbeing Part One #1 - Zac Thompson, Hayden Sherman, and Jim Campbell - A book about loss and discovery, Into the Unbeing sets up an intriguing story tackling extremely relevant themes through the guise of science fiction and horror. The comic reminds me of the work of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy. Hayden Sherman continues to show why he’s one of the best up-and-coming artists in the business — I can’t wait for this comic to truly embrace its weirdness and see some truly messed up stuff. 8/10

IDW Publishing

Godzilla: Skate or Die #1 - Louie Joyce and Rus Wooton - This is a wild concept that is a lot of fun. These kids just want to skate, but Varan has other ideas. I truly hope this comic ends with Godzilla doing a kickflip — these stories work best when embracing the chaos. 6.5/10

Marvel Comics

Blood Hunt #3 - Jed MacKay, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, and VC’s Cory Petit - What’s really impressed me with Jed MacKay’s writing is he always gives everyone on team’s he writes a chance to shine — some great moments here with Larraz and Gracia doing a great job amplifying a world that’s overrun with vampires. 8.5/10

X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse #1 - Steve Foxe, Netho Diaz, JP Mayer, Alex Sinclair, and VC’s Clayton Cowles - This is a fun book pitting some of the X-Men’s most notable (and some not-so-notable) faces together in a bid to become Apocalypse’s heir. The first issue does a competent job setting up conflict while teasing the return of a surprise villain. 6.5/10

Valiant Comics

X-O Manowar: Invictus - Becky Cloonan, Michael W. Conrad, Fernando Baldo, Brushu Studio, Ludwig Olimba, Ezequiel Inverni - Another solid entry into the series that is just great sci-fi all-around set in the Valiant Universe. 7.5/10
