James Gunn Clarifies: Kevin Maguire/JLI "Definitely" Influenced the DCU
Aggregation went crazy this weekend.
I logged in this morning to see this post from Kevin Maguire. I was bummed, as I thought I somehow screwed up our conversation about the Justice League International as some aggregation sites said the original interview said Gunn’s DCU was “heavily” inspired the comic. While Maguire did say the film is inspired by the series, the word “heavily” was never said in the interview. Here’s the quote:
“Yeah! Me and a bunch of other writers and artists were invited to the set of Superman for a day in May. They showed us everything. They showed us the pre-production stuff. They showed us some footage. I got to walk around the Fortress of Solitude set and watch them shoot a scene. There's definitely a JLI sort of influence there.”
This is why I never do interviews. My suggesting there was a JLI influence had nothing to do with anything I saw on the set. It was based on common knowledge, the fact that Guy Gardner, Maxwell Lord and Booster Gold were going to be around. It's not a confirmation of anything.

Interviewing Kevin was one of the best moments of my career, as I’m a huge fan of his work. So, I felt horrible that aggregators misconstrued the words, even though I didn’t do anything wrong. Thankfully, James Gunn cleared things up.
So… How is your morning going?
