The Best Comic Covers Coming Out This Week - February 5th

Here's my favorite covers from this week!

Many great comics are coming out this week, and with the releases, I’m starting a new series on Comic Frontier, where I showcase my favorite covers of the week! So, without further adieu:

Cover of the Week: Cruel Kingdom #2 - Adam Pollina - Oni Press - This image is absolutely epic - and, on the stands, is one that immediately would capture a reader’s attention. The skull mountain/city is so damn cool. Oni Press has absolutely nailed their covers in this series and this might be the best one yet.

JSA #4 - DC Comics - Riley Rossmo and Ivan Plascencia - Rossmo showed he was one of the premiere Sandman artists during his time on the excellent Wesley Dodds: The Sandman miniseries with Robert Venditti. His newest cover with Plascencia for JSA #4 features Sand getting a piece of his own medicine in Rossmo’s trademark style - it’s honestly quite terrifying.

Birds of Prey #18 (1:25) - Rian Gonzalez - DC Comics - I will never get sick of these cutesy variants, and Gonzalez’s latest Birds of Prey cover is no exception. Seeing Cass gaming, Barda sleeping on the couch, and all the details throughout show the softer side of these characters - all while feeling quite cozy. The only downside of the cover is it's a 1:25 incentive variant, meaning it’s harder for small shops to get and goes for much more than thecover price.

Spirits of Vengeance #6 - Rod Reis - Marvel Comics - Rod Reis might be the best working cover artist in comics. His Ghost Rider cover manages to be sexy, a bit scary, and simultaneously very human but supernatural. And the use of color? chefs kiss

The Ultimates #9 - Taurin Clarke - Marvel Comics - At this point, I always expect Clarke to do superb work as he has never missed with his covers, and his The Ultimates #9 cover is a beautifully composed piece of art that tells a story itself. I have no notes.
