Who Makes Sense As The Next Batman Writer?

Here are five writer's I'd love to see take on the Dark Knight

Chip Zdarsky has officially confirmed his run on Batman with Jorge Jimenez ends with issue #157. While Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee will write a sequel series to Hush, DC will need a new writer to take on the ongoing series afterward. There are several quality candidates who I’d love to see get the chance to do Batman. Here’s who I’d consider.

Watters is a star on the rise from his work on Universal Monsters: Creature From the Black Lagoon Lives! and Destro for Skybound, Sword of Azrael and Arkham City: Order of the World for DC Comics, and Coffin Bound and The Six Fingers for Image Comics. Having already written an excellent Dark Knight story in Batman Secret Files #3 (with John Paul Leon) and being the new writer on Nightwing for the All-In era, Watters has the resume to take on the ongoing series.

The co-creator and writer of Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel, Willow Wilson has penned some excellent stories for several different publishers, including acclaimed runs on The Dreaming: Waking Hours, Wonder Woman, and Poison Ivy - all for DC Comics. Wilson’s one of the best in the business, but the question remains, would she want to do a book with such editorial mandates? :

Jeremy Adams might not be the flashiest name, but his work with DC Comics ranks among the highest quality and most consistent among the publisher’s current writing stable. Adams has done excellent work on Green Lantern, brought the joy back to The Flash, and is tapped to take on Aquaman next. Adams would bring some much-needed light-hearted fun back to the title.

With an acclaimed run on Detective Comics, Ram V has shown he has the chops to take on Batman in a big way, potentially offering a very unique take on the hero. If his Detective Comics run doesn’t make you believe he’s got what it takes, I’d highly recommend checking out his other work, including The Swamp Thing, These Savage Shores, and the Many Deaths of Laila Starr. He will also be taking on New Gods for DC’s All-In initiative. It feels like it's a matter of when, not if, Ram V will ever take on the main Batman title.

At this point, Kelly Thompson should be the writer both Marvel and DC are trying to get for their most prominent titles: The Amazing Spider-Man and Batman. Thompson’s outstanding work includes a character-defining run on Captain Marvel, bringing new life to the Birds of Prey, and has created an all-new take on Wonder Woman in Absolute Wonder Woman. Few writers deserve a shot more than Thompson and if DC’s smart, they’ll give her the big profile with the Batman series.
