Marc Guggenheim Talks Working With Comic Legends - Creator Owned Art

The Arrowverse co-creator talks comic art!

Marc Guggenheim is an American-born comic book writer and television producer whose work includes X-Men Gold, The Amazing Spider-Man, Justice Society of America, and The Flash. Guggenheim created the television shows Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow and co-wrote 2011’s Green Lantern.

I spoke with Guggenheim about his favorite piece of art from his collection as part of my Creator Owned Art series, where I talk with creatives about art from their collection that’s meaningful to them. Here’s what he said:

Probably most favorite piece of art from my collection is this page from Justice Society #50 by George Pérez:

George is my all-time favorite comic book artist and — full disclosure — I had the privilege of writing this particular story — my only collaboration with George, unfortunately — which was about how the Justice League was inspired by the Justice Society.

When I had to evacuate during the recent Southern California wildfires, this was the only piece of art I took with me.

Here’s some more.

This is actually the very first piece of comic book art I ever owned, a page from X-Men/Micronauts #2 by Jackson Guice and Bob Wiacek.  My dad bought it for me at a comic book convention at the now-defunct Pennsylvania Hotel across from Penn Station in Manhattan.

John Byrne is my second-favorite artist (and one of my all-time favorite writers) and I bought this page from Alpha Flight #12 because I wanted to own some of his art and this page was among the most affordable.

I generally try only to ballooned/lettered pages of original art, but I make exceptions for art from things I’ve written. The above spread is from Amazing Spider-Man #584 by two icons, John Romita Jr. and Klaus Janson. This arc was the only time I had the chance to work with both of them and it remains a career highlight for me.
